The Maties from Stellenbosch won a fast-paced, high-intensity final of the Varsity Cup at the Coetzenberg Sports Complex in Stellenbosch last night.
They beat the UCT Tigers 16 - 10 after trailing most of the second half.
Maties trailed UCT by 10 points to 6 before the referee called for almost 20 minutes of injury time because of a number of stoppages. A drop goal by Ricardo Croy as well as a try in the dying seconds of the match by Morne Jooste handed Maties the inaugural Varsity Cup trophy.
A notably dejected UCT coach, Robbie Fleck, didn't hold back any ! punches saying his side were better on the night and throughout the tournament and deserved a win.
